New Electoral Commission
The Electoral (Administration) Amendment Act 2010, passed in May 2010, created the new Electoral Commission as an independent Crown Entity taking over the functions and responsibilities of the Chief Electoral Office and the current Electoral Commission.
It is fully functional as of 1 October 2010. It is responsible for all electoral functions at the national level, including public education, research, conduct of general elections, by-elections and referenda.
The Electoral (Administration) Amendment Act 2011 transfers the functions of the Chief Registrar of Electors to the Commission on 1 July 2012.
