Just been summoned
Jury summons
In 2009, over 300,000 people were summoned for jury service. Many of them had never served before. Naturally, they had some questions. Some were probably a little worried about what they would have to do. And it’s good to ask questions.
What's expected of you
If you’ve been summoned, it’s important to understand what you’ve been asked to do. The summons includes information about how long you’re likely to serve as a juror. This is usually one week, but check. Your summons might state that you’ll be needed for longer.
If you can't attend
Sometimes people selected for jury service can’t attend. For example, they might be out of town at the required time or have an important deadline at work. This is understandable. You must apply to defer (put off) your jury service or to be excused.
Update address details
If you have received a jury summons with an old address it may be because your address details have not been updated with the Electoral Enrolment Centre.
Response forms
You can download a copy of the jury summons response form online and email it back to the court.
