Preliminary Conference

Overview of what happens at a Weathertight Homes Tribunal preliminary conference.

A Weathtertight Homes Tribunal preliminary conference will occur between 15 and 25 working days after your claim is filed. The purpose of the conference is to ensure all parties will be well prepared for the process.

The conference will:

  • confirm respondents' details and those of any parties' legal representatives
  • clarify the details of the claim and what is disputed
  • confirm joinder (adding) of new respondent/s
  • confirm/discuss removal of named respondent/s
  • consider referral for mediation
  • confirm who may be giving evidence
  • decide if any witnesses need to be summoned
  • enable the provision and exchange of relevant documents
  • find out if interpreters or other assistance is required
  • set the timetable for proceeding
  • settle any other procedural matters.

Who must attend

The claimant and all respondents must attend the conference, along with any legal representatives or advisers. If you don’t attend, the Tribunal may proceed with the conference regardless.

Conference location

The venue for the conference will generally be in the region of the building concerned. In Auckland or Wellington it will be held in the Tribunal's hearing rooms. If it’s difficult to bring the parties to the same place the conference may be held by phone.
